A prized retreat since 1974!

Afognak Wilderness Lodge is located in a pristine setting in Seal Bay on Afognak Island, the jewel of the Kodiak Islands.  It is an incredible experience in a totally remote atmosphere where you can play hard, eat big and sleep deep.  It is ideal for those who want the freedom of both fresh & saltwater fishing, plus up close land & marine wildlife-viewing in the remote wilderness by day, yet all the comforts of home, by night.  Afognak Wilderness Lodge is popular with singles, couples, families and business groups alike, with many repeat and referred guests since 1974.  The best way of describing your visit is simply to say, "You'll want to return!" The terrain in our area of Afognak is composed of lowlands and areas of up to 1,000 feet elevation.  There are forested and non-forested lands as well as many beaches. Sheltered from most foul weather, the smaller forested bays within & around Seal Bay provide an exceedingly beautiful and pleasant place to explore. Temperatures range between 50° and  75°F spring through fall.

Along the majestic shores there are many streams and their estuaries, tucked into cozy nooks that only a handful of people get to enjoy simultaneously. Sockeye, Pink and Silver Salmon and also Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden call these streams home. Offshore, there's a myriad of saltwater species waiting to saturate your fishing urge from the giant Halibut right down to the delicate Flounder. At low tide, you can dig clams, harvest mussels, pursue an octopus or just investigate the interesting inter-tidal zone. A guest freezer and waxed boxes are available for those who want to take their catch home.

We furnish all fishing gear as part of our daily rates for both fresh and saltwater fishing, but if you have your own favorite salmon/trout gear, feel free to bring it. You would be hard pressed to find a place where the fishing is better than it is here. At our fishing spots, both along the stream banks and at the estuaries, the salmon abound by the thousands and you do not have to compete to find your own friendly nooks.

In addition, we have an advantage over inland locations by also having the North Pacific's bounty of seafood, ranging from bottom fish to shellfish, which also makes for first class dining while with us. Our spacious hand-hewn log guest cabins are elegantly rustic and cozy, nestled where the edge of the virgin forest meets with tranquil waters of a protected cove. Each cabin has two bedrooms, an ample living room and a modern bathroom with hot, running water--plenty of creature comforts.  Our cabins can comfortably accommodate up to 12 - 15 guests, depending on configuration.

Freshwater Fishing

Salmon

Nearby, we have three of the five species (Reds, Pinks and Silvers).  Red [Sockeyes] run from the 2nd week of June through mid-July  Pinks [Humpbacks] run from mid-July throughout August; Silvers [Coho] run from late-July through mid-late September.

Trout

Rainbow, Steelhead and Dolly Varden are available nearby.

Saltwater Fishing

Halibut

We have both deep sea fishing poles and skate-type gear [long line with multiple hooks, anchored to the ocean floor] for you if you would like to help  pulling in the catch. Both methods are a lot of fun!

Others

These fish are constant throughout the summer. Cod, Ling Cod, Red Snapper, Yellow Eye, Sea Bass [Rockfish], Flounder, Greenling, etc. are also abundant as well as the crustaceans Mussels, Cockles and Clams.
