General information on fishing Southeast Alaska:

Southeast Alaska offers the diversity of fish and shellfish in a near-shore environment that is productive and fun to fish. The main species pursued by fishermen are the five species of Pacific Salmon and the Pacific Halibut. Rainbow, cutthroat, and steelhead trout are also available in some freshwater stream.  Most lodges will put crab pots out on the way to fish in the mornings and dinner is waiting when you return from a long hard day of hauling in the “Big Ones”.

The variety of Lodges in Southeast is substantial, with most offering less than a week stay. Day Charters are available from Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan with some of the boats available for overnight charters. Imagine spending your nights in sheltered harbors listening to the water lap against the sides of your bedroom, with the sound of Glaciers calving in the background and halibut bumping the bottom of your boat. Because this is an inland waterway it is fairly well protected from the open Pacific, but even the slightest storm can make the going a little rough. Weather is always a factor in what ever you have planned in Alaska, if you let it be a part of your Experience you will always have fun and a trip you will never forget.

All the lodges practice combination fishing and it means more action for you! Lodges are generally within 1 to 1 ˝ hour run to the fishing grounds and in a 10-hour day you will probably limit out on two or three species. The scenery is magnificent in Southeast Alaska with calm green waters rising up to rich dense forest covered mountain peaks. Some of the Lodges offer Fly out day trips that can take you back into secluded rivers where you can fish for Trout or Steelhead. Most of the fishing in Southeast is done in the Salt water and you can expect long days on the water, so bring your sun block and your Dramamine if motion tends to get to you. The Lodges in Southeast range in level of service but most tend to be on the upper-mid side when it comes to pricing and as I stated before, they do offer less than weeklong stays, which helps with the cost. The one thing that adds to your expense is getting there. With only one commercial airline, that services Southeast Alaska the prices from your hometown to Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, can be costly.
