The greater Ketchikan
area is historically known for the abundance of salmon, halibut, and other
species of bottom fish, thus giving Ketchikan
the slogan, "The Salmon Capital of the World." At Yes Bay, a personal guide and boat is
assigned to 'two' guests, thereby
allowing guests the opportunity to
determine their own daily itinerary. All guides are Coast Guard licensed and
certified with CPR and First Aid training.
HALIBUT: Halibut is the most popular bottom
fish and can weight from 15 to over 100 pounds. Adults can weigh over 300
pounds, and live up to 20 years. They are available throughout the season with
a peak during July and August. Guests fish for Halibut 5-20 minutes from the
lodge at the mouth of Yes Bay, Western Behm Canal, Spacious Bay, Gedney Pass, and Behm Narrows.
STEELHEAD: Steelheads have
characteristics of both salmon and trout and weighs from 8-18 pounds. They are
similar to salmon in that they are born in freshwater, live most of their lives
in saltwater, and migrate to freshwater to spawn. Unlike salmon, however, they
do not die after spawning, but return to the saltwater until the next spawning
cycle. The best fishing is in the area around McDonald Lake. Guests catch and release
steelhead at Wolverine Creek, Walker Creek, Reflection Lake,
Cow Creek, and Herman Creek through mid-June.
The lodge operates
20-foot Olympic convertible soft top boats, seating two guests comfortably. The
main running motor on each boat are Honda Four Stroke outboard motors. The
trolling motors are Honda 8 horse motors. All boats are equipped with Furuno
graphs as well as downriggers. The lodge provides graphite rods with Penn reels
for both salmon and bottom fishing. Foul weather gear is provided for your
convenience, including rain jackets and rain bibs ranging in size from adult
small to XXXL. Rain hats and knee high rubber boots are also available, boots
ranging in size from adult men's sizes 3 to 15.
RAINBOW TROUT: Rainbows commonly reach up to 18 inches long. They are known for
their red stripe along their lateral line. Rainbows are available in all of the
streams for catch and release fishing.
CUTTHROAT TROUT: Cutthroats are green with white specs, and have two
red slashes under their gills. Trophy fish weigh over 3 pounds. Cutthroats are
available in all of the streams for catch and release fishing.
DOLLY VARDEN (CHAR): Dollies were named for the pink spots on their
body similar to the dress worn by "Dolly Varden" These sea-run trout
average 12-14 inches long. Catch and release fishing is available on all of the
local streams.
